Catalytic Mineral

Catalytic mineral media have active surfaces that support the oxidation of iron and manganese in water. The resulting solid particles can be retained in the filter bed.

This family includes manganese-based mineral grains and materials with active coatings. Differences in surface structure mean that pH, oxygen and oxidant requirements also vary.

Application and use

  • In groundwater treatment, a suitable catalytic bed combines iron or manganese oxidation with retention of the resulting solids.
  • Aeration or oxidant addition is assessed alongside the selected medium and raw-water chemistry.
  • Backwashing removes retained precipitates, with the wash capacity matched to the actual medium.
  • Hydrogen-sulfide treatment is evaluated only where the selected grade explicitly supports that application.

Frequently asked questions

Can iron and manganese be removed in one filter bed?

Some products treat both, but manganese may need different pH, oxidant and contact conditions. Review both inlet concentrations and outlet targets.

Can it run without chemical dosing?

It depends on the grade. Some catalytic media require continuous oxidant; others use different regeneration methods. Follow the selected product's instructions.

Is it suitable for hydrogen-sulfide odor?

Some catalytic products list hydrogen sulfide treatment. Verify suitability against the exact product and raw-water analysis.

Can it directly replace sand in an existing filter?

Do not assume direct replacement until the vessel, support bed, oxidant system and backwash capacity match the selected medium's requirements.

Why can manganese remain after iron is removed?

Manganese oxidation can require different pH, oxidant and contact conditions. Check these before replacing the bed.
